Free spins & the two expiry windows casinos don't make obvious

Last updated: 2026-07-12 · Gamblerfy editorial team

Most players assume a free spins offer has one expiry date. In practice, it's usually a chain of two or three separate clocks — and missing any one of them can cost you the whole bonus.

Clock 1: the window to claim or activate

Many offers require you to opt in, make a qualifying deposit, or place a set number of bets within a short window — sometimes just 24 to 72 hours — before the spins are even credited to your account. Miss this and the offer disappears before you've played a single spin.

Clock 2: the window to actually play the spins

Once credited, free spins often expire fast — frequently within 24 hours, occasionally a few days. This is a completely separate deadline from the claim window above, and it's the one that catches most players off guard.

Clock 3: the window to clear wagering on any winnings

If your spins win anything, that money usually lands as bonus funds with its own wagering requirement and its own expiry — a third clock, layered on top of the first two.

The hidden rule that can void everything: max bet while a bonus is active

Separately from all three clocks, many casinos cap the size of any bet you can place while you have bonus funds or bonus winnings active in your account — commonly around $5 per spin or per bet. Go over that limit, even on an unrelated game, and the operator can void the bonus and any winnings tied to it entirely. This rule is rarely stated near the headline offer; it's usually buried a few paragraphs into the full terms.

Cash winnings vs. bonus-balance winnings

Check whether winnings from free spins are paid as real cash (withdrawable, or subject only to their own light conditions) or as further bonus funds (subject to a fresh wagering requirement, plus max cashout caps). The terms usually say this explicitly, but it's easy to miss.

A checklist before you claim any free spins offer

  1. How long do you have to activate/claim the spins?
  2. How long do you have to use them once credited?
  3. Are winnings paid as cash or as bonus funds requiring further wagering?
  4. What's the max bet allowed while any bonus is active?
  5. Which games are excluded from eligibility (even if they appear playable)?
